Concept stuff- I've been playing around with this idea for a while.
The headpiece is a divine instrument connected to the creature and "floats" above them. (Okami-esque) the headpieces are made of elements not found on this planet, and possess the ability to "sing" a low frequency tune that has trance like properties. The creatures who wear these armour like headpieces are described as a mirage, a ghost, neither dead or alive.
